A Comparison of the VISION COACH and DynaVision D2

Robin Donley, Optometric Vision Therapist

Vision CoachVISION… the process of deriving meaning from what is seen
EYESIGHT… the ability to see, clarity
TRACKING… the capability to follow a moving object smoothly and accurately
with both eyes
DYNAMIC VISUAL ACUITY… to see objects clearly while you and/or the objects are
moving quickly
CENTRAL-PERIPHERAL INTEGRATION… to monitor and interpret information around you while attending to a central, specific task
EYE-HAND-BODY COORDINATION… how our hands, feet, body, and other muscles respond to information gathered through the eyes
VISUAL REACTION TIME… the speed with which your brain interprets and reacts to
visual information

These are just a few examples of the visual skills required to achieve the highest level of performance for the Athlete, Tactical Force Member, or the Individual with Rehabilitation needs. Although Vision Training or Visual Rehabilitation has recently been accepted as a vital role in the development and enhancement of the above mentioned, Vision Therapy has been practiced successfully for over 60 years. It is within the past 15 to 20 years we have seen the acceptance of this specific training and the use of equipment like the AcuVision 1000, which was highly coveted by Behavioral Optometrist and Sports Vision Trainers alike. With this acceptance comes the development of Vision Training equipment or “tools", and with time and knowledge new technology has been implemented to improve what has been offered in the past.

The VISION COACH has been developed with knowledge of the visual system, knowledge and experience in Vision Training, knowledge of patient and clients’ needs, along with the awareness of what existing interactive units lack for maximum Visual Training.

The VISION COACH made its debut in 2009 and since then has exploded into the world of Sports Vision Training, Tactical Training and Rehabilitation Therapies. With the increasing awareness of the VISION COACH we have received many requests for information on our unit and for information on how the
VISION COACH and the DynaVision D2 compare. Below is a list that outlines the differences between the VISION COACH and the DynaVision D2 with the information being to the best of our understanding.

VISION COACH vs. DynaVision D2

VC Wi-Fi compatible interacting with all devices including iPad, Android, Windows and smart phones
D2 Non Wi-Fi compatible

VC 50” x 34”; dimensions allow for training the horizontal periphery, our most dominant, permits the user to reach all lights at eye level, 37 lb. board, 7/8” depth, rounded corners for safety
D2 48” x 48”; some users at eye level (center of display), may not be able to reach the outer ring of lights without being elevated (example; stool or chair) due to the dimensions of the display and inability to lower the display down to an appropriate level, square dimensions do not allow for maximum horizontal periphery training, 127 lbs., 7” in depth, pointed corners

VC embodies its own internal software and micro-processors, USB port allows for future program uploads, VC will not be replaced by a “new” model…new programs developed, upload to existing unit through USB port, ability to “print out” results with use of any computer/printer, user friendly visual print out including times, scores, and visual fields in color
*NOTE* VC display is not a “slave” to the computer
D2 hollow aluminum unit, laptop computer needed to run unit, table needed for computer to stand on side of D2 with wires leading to unit, DynaVision’s 2nd model, black and white print outs available, D2 is a “slave” to the external computer

VC solid state unit, embedded circuit boards, highest quality LED’s used with 14,000 hour life span per LED, no bulbs to change
D2 soldered or connected wires, LED bulbs used, per operations manual, page 85; LED’s should be checked monthly to ensure proper function

VC solid, flat, black, matte membrane with no visual cues or glare, no ambient lighting required, may be used in a fully lit or dark room, or even outside on the field
D2 black or dark gray facing with overlay of clear, hard, plastic,(*note* with the introduction of the VISION COACH this overlay has been removed, facing still gives off glare) square buttons, easily seen and felt, ambient lighting required, unable to use unit outside due to glare and poor contrast of LED lighting

VC wall mounted, counter weight slider offering effortless height adjustment from floor to ceiling, 48” of travel, no electrical components to breakdown within slider, wall mounting engineered to mount on any type wall: stucco, wood, steel, cement or brick, requires 6 lag bolts for installation; fits “flush” against wall and/or stand, entire unit sits 3” off wall, secure mount, display (board) will not come off wall once installed, traveling sports stand available by special order
D2 motorized display, slow and noisy, electrical components within, 28” of travel, wheelchair height is lowest available position, uses “hooks” and “wires” for mounting, “earthquake” strap included for securing to wall, sits over 7” off wall, traveling stand available

VC no “ON” or “OFF” switch, powers down into “sleep mode” after 5 minutes of non-use
Uses 3 volts of electricity
D2 has “ON”, “OFF” switch
Uses 120 volts of electricity, unit needs to be “grounded”

VC 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 90, or 120 lights available for programming, offers speeds 0 and 1-11, visual field options include; full field, reduced field, upper left, lower left, left side, upper right, lower right, right side, top half, bottom half, and a sequential pattern
D2 6 light speeds available with 4 different operating modes

VC “fixator” light available for central/peripheral training and divided attention tasks, program “ON”, “OFF”, or “ACTIVE” with any trial chosen
D2 tachistoscope used for central peripheral training and divided attention tasks, flashes letters, numbers and shapes

VC 80 of the 120 available lights have silkscreened letters and numbers for cognitive loading or training which are silkscreened from the back of the membrane, cannot be seen until light appears, cannot be felt, includes a full set of uppercase letters, full set of lower case letters and three sets of numbers 1-9
b’s and d’s, p’s and q’s, 5’s and s’s in sequential pattern for the education of reversals/loading
D2 no letters or numbers on lights, letters and numbers available for programming on tachistoscope

VC offers red, green, or red and green lights for programming, high quality red/blue sports goggles included for use with red/green lights, used for binocularity
(eye teaming) assessment and enhancement
D2 offers red, green, or red and green lights for programming, no lenses available for use with red/green lights, reasoning given for red and green lights on unit…cognitive

VC offers a speed “zero” which will allow the user success with each and every trial programmed, speed “zero” will not time out on user
D2 offers specific timed trials

VC flat surface (membrane) may be cleaned after each use for Nosocomial resistance to “super bugs” with use of Cavicide or disinfecting wipes
D2 per operations manual page 85, it is recommended to be cleaned once per week with 99% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol, must take apart front panel to clean sufficiently due to projecting buttons

VC offers precision in the training of eye-hand-body coordination, unit is not a “touch screen”, accurate depression is required offering tactile, auditory, and visual feedback to the user
D2 does not require “precision” in the striking of the buttons for eye-hand-body coordination training

VC may be used for baseline testing, post-concussion rehabilitation, and binocularity assessment
D2 may be used for baseline testing, and post-concussion rehabilitation

VC developed by an Optometric Vision Therapist with 10 years of experience in Vision Training, designed by Variant Embedded Systems with over 25 years’ experience with high-level research and development and complete technology solutions, VC is a technologically advanced unit
